What Next For Vitali Klitschko?

boxingJames Slater in Germany – WBC heavyweight king Vitali Klitschko won comfortably against a very game Albert Sosnowski last night at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany – finally halting the Pole at 2 mins and 40 secs of the 10th round. However, it is likely a number of fans will not have been overly impressed at the 38-year-old’s performance. A typical safety-first display by the elder of the two Klitschkos, Vitali won with something to spare; but could he have got the job done a lot sooner than he did had he really tried to do so? Certainly, that’s how it looked to me from my seat at ringside.

Still, what is important is the fact that “Dr. iron Fist” won and retained his belt in the process – thus keeping alive the possibility of a big fight with WBA champ David Haye. And this is the fight we all want to see, and what seemingly everyone is talking about. Indeed, last night while at the magnificent arena the fight took place at, local fans everywhere had Haye’s name on their lips..

“When will Haye accept the fight?” German fan after German fight fan asked me, simply because I am English. And, the sad part is, I couldn’t answer them! “Your man is scared and he knows he has no chance with Vitali or Wladimir,” the younger fans told me. Perhaps they were expecting me to disagree strongly with them, but I actually found myself in agreement with them. Is Haye reluctant to get it on with either “Doctor?” (scared is too strong a word). I am starting to feel this is the case; more so than ever before.

But would the Vitali we saw last night have the beating of the fast, young and big-hitting Brit? Is Vitali, as dominant as he was against “The Dragon,” starting to show signs of age? And with his low-held hands, would Klitschko be in trouble against “The Hayemaker?”

Logically, and in an ideal world, Haye would step up and fight a Klitschko next. Both brothers are calling out the man who spent all of last year calling them out, yet so far they have had no response. Will this now change, or will Haye fight someone like Audley Harrison next instead? And if the WBC ruler cannot get the fight he says he will win inside four-rounds, who will he actually face next?

The Klitschkos and Haye aside, the weight class is pretty thin, and no obvious match-up jumps out other than the one we all want to see. Vitali seemingly has approx one or two fights left in him. It really will be a crying shame if one of them is not against Mr. Haye!
