Showtime Super Six Forecast

Michael Shou-Yung Shum – The group stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Showtime is entering its final round, and – other than Andre Ward who has already advanced – the remaining five fighters are still in contention to reach the knockout stage. Andre Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler, and Carl Froch are all on two points after two matches, and will be looking for results in their next fights to go through. Arthur Abraham is in second place with three points and is likely to advance. Allan Green needs a knockout and some help. Here’s how I see the rest of the tournament playing out:

ANDRE WARD VERSUS ANDRE DIRRELL (Sept. 25)

I like Ward on points in this match-up. He has looked great in his two tournament wins (over Kessler and Green), and shown a level of toughness that bodes well for his professional future.. Dirrell has faster hands and is more mobile, but Ward’s reflexes are sharp (as shown against Green) and he may negate Dirrell’s advantages with his excellent timing. Because Ward is already through to the knockout stage and Dirrell needs points to advance, one may suspect that Dirrell has greater motivation, but it is difficult to find a young American fighter that is more competitive and focused than Ward. “S.O.G.” doesn’t want to lose a) his zero, and b) the WBA title he wrested from Kessler; expect him to retain both in another mauling type of effort. Prediction: WARD UD 12 in a potentially tedious fight.

CARL FROCH VERSUS ARTHUR ABRAHAM (Unscheduled)

Both fighters are coming off their first losses, Froch to Kessler in a hard-fought war and Abraham to Dirrell in a match where Abraham was dominated and then disqualified for a late blow. Abraham does have an extra point from his K.O. of Jermain Taylor In the first round, which may be enough to see him through to the knockout stage regardless of outcome. Froch will be looking for a result here, and I think this additional incentive is enough to give him an edge in this fight. He is also the bigger man with a 2.5” reach advantage. Froch has had problems with quick opponents (i.e., against Jean Pascal, Taylor, and Dirrell) and Kessler outworked him, but Abraham is neither especially fast nor active. I expect Froch to use his size to maintain range and box his way to a close decision, although no doubt there will be some dicey moments. Prediction: FROCH SD/MD 12 in a tense fight.

MIKKEL KESSLER VERSUS ALLAN GREEN (Sept. 25)

As is his wont, Green talked a lot prior to his fight with Ward and then phoned it in once inside the ring, barely throwing any meaningful punches after the third stanza en route to losing every round on all three judges’ cards. I’d like to say that he shows up against Kessler, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Kessler, who just picked up his third belt at 168 lbs. by beating Froch for his WBC title, doesn’t have any clear physical advantages over Green: this isn’t the same Kessler who faced Joe Calzaghe; Mikkel is older, slower, and no longer seems to have the same zip in his straight right. However, he does have a champion’s heart, which is the ingredient Green seems to lack, for all his physical talent. Prediction: KESSLER UD 12 in another fight where Green fades badly down the stretch.

KNOCKOUT STAGE FORECAST

Ward will have six points from three victories, and will be seeded #1 in the knockout stage. Both Kessler and Froch will have four points from two victories, but Kessler will be seeded #2 due to his head-to-head win over Froch. The #4 seed will be Arthur Abraham, on three points from his KO win over Taylor.

In the #1 vs. #4 match-up, Ward easily outboxes Abraham, possibly winning every round. In a rematch of their fight from the group stage, I see Froch coming out on top this time over Kessler in another rugged brawl. Froch just seems to have a little more left in the tank at this point.

In the final, I expect Ward to beat Froch, and then to face Lucian Bute sometime in 2012 to unify the 168 lb. titles (Bute has the IBF belt). This would be the biggest fight in the super middleweight division since Roy Jones fought James Toney in 1994.

Team Valuev Accepts $2.5 Million Offered By Team Klitschko

Nikolay Valuev

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—“No more lies, K2,” Team Valuev said today. “No more posturing. No more subterfuge. No more deceit.”

Team Valuev announced today that they will accept an offer made by K2 Promotions for former two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai “Russian Giant” Valuev (50-2, 34 KOs), from St. Petersburg, Russia., to face World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs), from Ukraine.

Promoter Don King said much misinformation has been disseminated regarding his position and statements pertaining to Valuev, the fighter he represents with Sauerland Event.

“Due to many incorrect representations in the past, I want to make it perfectly clear that K2 Promotions has offered Nikolai Valuev $2.5 million to face Vitali Klitschko, and on behalf of Team Valuev, we are accepting their offer..

“Nikolai Valuev is the pride of Russia and the Russian people, and he wants to fight for his country and his fans. I hope K2 keeps their word. I hope we are done with the excuses, be they physical, financial or otherwise. Let’s get it on. Let’s go to the mat. My man Niko is going to knock Vitali out.”

Last Words from Ward and Green Camps

boxingby Waldon “TBD” White- On Saturday June 19th WBA Champion Andre Ward who weighed in at 167 & 3/4lbs defends his title against Allan Green coming in today at 166lbs at the Oracle Arena in Oakland California. This fight is a part of Showtime’s Super Six Boxing Classic tournament starting at 10 PM ET/PT which will determine the best of the best in the exciting 168 pound Super Middleweight Division. Tomorrow’s fight will be one of the biggest test for unbeaten Olympian Andre Ward who is the favorite his upcoming bout with the dangerous Allan Green. Many words have been said by both camps in regards to the other in this intriguing match up which will be one of Ward’s toughest test to date. Green, who feels that he shouldn’t have been overlooked originally during the composition of the tournament for Jermaine Taylor will now have a chance to show the world why he should have been included from the gate. Most pundits say that Green has the ability to stop the fight at anytime with one punch and holds the edge in power, while others point to Wards exceptional ring presence and natural boxing ability. Not at a loss for words both camps have traded barbs with one another and had stern warnings for their opponents. Virgil Hunter, Ward’s trainer and mentor had very sharp words for the Green camp in response to comments made by Green and his trainer..

Virgil: ” It will be a devastating victory for Andre Ward come Saturday, I’ve gotten to them… the Green camp is upset at me because I’m telling them that my fighter is going to tear their man up. I’m putting more pressure on Green because I have seen some of his flaws and he is now fighting with something to prove. I know that the first thing that happens bad in the ring to Green early on will signal the beginning of his demise. I’m going to keep the mental pressure on him and his camp and I will not let up!”

boxing

Andre Ward not one to do much talking outside of the ring and a fighter not predisposed to pre fight trash talk let his trainer and management/promotional team do most of the speaking. Andre stated that he’s ready to talk inside the ring and defend his title successfully against Allan Green rather than get into a mental war of words before the fight takes place. Today after the weigh in during the face off Ward and Green clearly began to talk to each other with the two eventually having to be separated. The tension that has built for this fight was clearly evident at the weigh in with Green’s camp highly emotional and energized ready to fight. Andre Ward displayed a almost unreal calmness and focused disposition up until the face off which showed a rare look at Wards more aggressive side usually only reserved for the ring. Allen Green looked determined to prove his place in the division and quite ready to get it on in the ring as well. I asked Green if he had any last words for the public and his detractors before the fight.

Allan Green: “I mean I feel great I’m just ready to relax and eat and prepare myself for the fight tomorrow.”

TBD: “What were you and Andre Ward talking about when you were in each other’s faces at the faceoff?”

boxing

Allan Green: “Well he kept saying I was a bully and I have my time coming and that it’s going to take a whole lot to dissect me and if my mother was not here right now I’d tell you the rest!”

It would seem that some bad blood has been thrown into the pool and tomorrow’s match will not be for the feint of heart as Allen Green has indicated that although he will not look for a knockout he will take it any moment that the Champion makes a mistake in the ring. Andre Ward and his camp believe that his discipline, work ethic and focus will enable him to make the best showing of his career. One thing that is for sure is that tomorrow’s fight will be exciting with many believing the winner will be the favorite to take the rest of the tournament. One thing is clear to me…Both of these men have come to fight.

Mike Tyson Still Punching Out

Remember the days of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out on the original Nintendo gaming system?  All those hours spent trying to beat Iron Mike in that final round?  Beating him seemed almost impossible, but then again, if Buster Douglas could do it, why couldn’t we?

Electronic gaming consoles have come a long way since then.  So what might we expect the next edition of Punch-Out to look like?  I don’t think this image is too far off.

Shigeyuki Uchiyama Loses His Ear During MMA Bout

Shigeyuki Uchiyama ear 2

Things were going according to plan for Shigeyuki Uchiyama as he put together combinations of punches and knees, taking control of his fight against Masaya “J-Taro” Takita.  However, only a few minutes into the second round, a double-leg takedown would cost Uchiyama both his ear and the fight.

Let’s call this his Evander Holyfield moment.

Shigeyuki Uchiyama ear 3

While performing the takedown, Uchiyama’s cauliflowered ear was clipped off by a vertical rope along the side of the ring.  A rather large piece of his ear could be seen on the canvas and it was not long before officials called the bout due to a doctors decision at 2:57 of the second round.

Manny in Mexico

 Photos by Rafael Soto/Zanfer

The seven-time world Champion, Manny Pacquiao was received this afternoon by Ney González, the governor of the state of Nayarit, in a ceremony also attended by Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran. Pacquiao, who is enjoying a pleasant holiday with his family, said he’s happy to be in Mexico for the first time and appreciates the hospitality the Mexican people have had for him and his family. Manny will return home this week to get ready to assume his post as a congressman in his native Philippines.

Pacquiao also said he wants the fight against Floyd Mayweather in November and everything is in the hands of his promoter Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank. “Mr. Arum is my promoter and will endeavor to ensure that the fight is done. I have no problems whatsoever if Arum says we will be ready to fight in November.”

Wearing the jersey of the Mexican soccer team, Pacquiao said he is rooting for Mecixo in the World Cup competition that starts this Friday. “Mexico is like my second country. The Mexican fans have always supported me in my great fights and the least I can do is thank them and support the Mexico team,” he said.

Former WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman tore the meniscus and stretched ligaments in his right knee when his knee gave out in round seven against Miguel Cotto on Saturday night in Yankee Stadium. He will under go surgery and be out of action for an undisclosed period.
—–

It has been confirmed that it was Foreman’s trainer Joe Grier who threw the towel in the ring in round eight. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. however ruled Foreman could continue and the bout went on one more round.
—–

According to East European press reports, WBO #1 Dmitry Pirog (16-0, 13 KOs) and Daniel Jacobs (20-0, 17 KOs) will collide for the vacant WBO middleweight belt former held by Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez. The bout is earmarked for the July 31 card headlined by Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz II in Las Vegas.
—–”

Martinez, who still holds the WBC super welterweight and middleweight championships, will be accompanied by his trainer Gabriel Sarmiento and advisor Sampson Lewkowicz at the 21st Annual International Boxing Hall of Fame weekend, beginning June 10th – 13th. Martinez is keeping himself in top physical condition as he awaits his next opponent to be announced at either super welterweight or middleweight. The Argentina-born world champion is now residing in Oxnard, California.
—–

Martinez’ countryman, longtime WBO flyweight champion Omar Narvaez (30-0-2, 19 KOs), has relinquished the WBO flyweight belt and will remain as WBO super flyweight champion after moving up to win that vacant title in his last fight. With 16 title defenses at 112lbs, he eclipsed the Argentinian record set by Carlos Monzon.

Nate Campbell medical results

After suffering a one-sided decision loss to Victor Ortiz on May 15, former unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell faced some serious questions about his career. Did he get old? Was it over? Was it time to shut it down? Even in the locker room immediately after the fight, Campbell wasted no time in assessing the situation. “I looked at John David [Jackson] and Terry [Trekas], and I said ‘give it to me straight’” said Campbell. “And both of them looked me in the eye and said ‘It doesn’t look good.’”Terry sat me down and said “Look, let’s have some tests done, and if the doctor says that’s it, then that’s it, at least at this level of competition.”

“And I was fully in agreement with that, because I will never allow myself to become somebody’s stepping stone.”

Campbell then underwent a battery of tests and MRI’s at Carillon Sports Medicine in St. Petersburg, Florida, run by Dr. Adam Brunson M.D. FAAFP.

“Mr. Campbell suffers from Right Piriformis Syndrome” commented Dr. Brunson. “This condition is caused by the piriformis muscle in the pelvis becoming inflamed, which in turn compresses the sciatic nerve. This also affects several other lower back, pelvis, and thigh muscles. The practical result is that the patient loses most of their ability for lateral movement, and in the case of a professional boxer, the ability to ‘plant’ ones feet to affect power punches. Mr. Campbell’s injury however did not happen overnight. This is a progressive condition, and in my opinion it has been affecting him for at least a year and probably longer. It’s actually quite surprising that Mr. Campbell had been able to perform at the level that he has over the past several years. The condition however can be corrected, and Mr. Campbell is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation routine that should restore most if not all of the movement, rotation, and flexibility in the affected areas.”

None of what Dr. Brunson told Campbell surprised him. “I knew I wasn’t shot, and I knew I didn’t just suddenly get old. I just never knew this was this serious. Yeah, it bothered me from time to time, but I always thought it was just part of being over 35. I never knew the true extent of the injury. In the last couple of training camps, when it would act up I would just take a day off from running and it would be ok the next day. This is probably something I should have dealt with a long time ago, or at least let my team know how serious it was. But you know how fighters are, we never think it’s that serious. We think we’re bulletproof” said Campbell.

As for what the future holds for him, Campbell is optimistic. “I’m ready to get back to work. I have about 8 to 10 weeks of this rehab left, but I can combine it with a training camp, so basically I’m good to go. Hopefully in the next few weeks Terry can get with Richard and Eric and see what Golden Boy is going to put together for me. They will probably think it’s best to put me in soft the first time out just to see if I’m better or not, but I’ll leave that up to them. I just want to fight.”

Crossroads fight for Cotto

By Graham Houston

Miguel Cotto, surely destined to be ranked with the all-time great Puerto Rican boxers, attempts to become a champion in three weight classes when he challenges junior middle champ Yuri Foreman at the new Yankee Stadium on Saturday, and he will be the crowd favourite even though his opponent lives in Brooklyn. Cotto’s big fights in New York have a Puerto Rican party atmosphere. He generates passionate support. Now Cotto’s career is at a critical stage. If Cotto wins he will continue to play a part on the big-fight front, either as a 154-pounder or as a welterweight. Defeat, though, could mean the end of a glorious career.

Cotto enlisted the services of legendary trainer Emanuel Steward for this fight. Steward tells me that the trainer-fighter relationship, and Cotto’s level of ability, exceeded expectations.

Steward has worked on Cotto’s balance and boxing technique, not changing him so much as getting him back to the classic boxer-puncher style of his earlier bouts. He feels we will see an improved Cotto, as well as a fighter who has regained his enthusiasm after last November’s stoppage defeat against Manny Pacquiao.

Cotto, Steward says, is ready emotionally and spiritually as well as physically.

Saturday’s fight, to be televised on HBO, has the potential to be a difficult one for Cotto, which is why Steward was brought on board in the so-called “hired gun” role.

Steward guided Julio Cesar Chavez to victory in the rematch with Frankie Randall and plotted unlikely victories for Oliver McCall and Evander Holyfield over Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe.

He sees this fight as exceptionally difficult because of Foreman’s elusive style. “Yuri Foreman’s a difficult opponent for any fighter in the world,” Steward told me in an interview for Boxing Monthly. “First, he’s a much better fighter than people give him credit for. He’s got great legs, the ability to go 20 rounds if he has to, going in one direction, going in the other direction, a complete circle, and in between times he has great coordination, throwing punches and getting in and out, and contrary to what other people say I think he punches better than people give him credit for. We have a very tough fight.”

Cotto will no doubt be focusing on keeping steady pressure on Foreman, if he can, seeking to launch fast attacks and probably trying to jab with his opponent or slip the jab and counter.

Foreman has the height and reach advantages — he towers over Cotto in the publicity photos — and it is not likely to be easy getting past his left jab. If Cotto can cut down the ring, though, and get in position to punch, he is likely to be the boxer doing the greater damage. Foreman is, as Steward says, a more authoritative hitter than generally believed but Cotto, even though he is moving up in weight, is the puncher in the fight.

Cotto has always been able to catch up with fast-moving types. Britain’s Michael Jennings was fleet-footed but Cotto chopped him down. Carlos Quintana tried to use the ring but couldn’t stay clear of Cotto’s firepower.

Foreman, though, is a junior middleweight who has boxed at 154 pounds for his whole career, while Cotto started out as a junior welter. If Foreman can get his jab to work consistently and perhaps drop in a snappy right hand from time to time he might be able to keep Cotto off of him for large portions of the rounds.

Even though he was meeting an opponent who had been diminished by making weight, I thought that Foreman took his fighting and punching to a new level in last November’s win over Daniel Santos. He dropped Santos twice and almost had him out on his feet at one point.

Although Foreman has only stopped eight opponents in 29 bouts he might, as the naturally bigger man, hit hard enough to get Cotto’s respect.

Steward says that Cotto isn’t a “shot” fighter, that the timing and coordination is still there. Still, Cotto has had some tough, bloody battles and the defeats against Antonio Margarito and Pacquiao were the type that can shorten careers. The loss to Margarito was particularly punishing and is now the subject of speculation due to the well-chronicled “loaded handwraps” issue involving Margarito.

Foreman, in contrast, has never been in what one could call a war although he struggled to stave off the earnest aggression of Andrey Tsurkan in December 2007. Foreman suffered a nasty cut over the right eye early in that fight and seemed in danger of falling apart in the fourth round, but he gritted his way through the rough patch, got his jab working and pulled away in the last three rounds to eke out the split decision.

I do believe that Foreman has matured and improved since the fight with Tsurkan. He is a fighter who feels his time has come, while Cotto is at the point in his career where the hard fights could begin to tell on him.

This is a highly interesting fight, made more so by the backstory of Foreman — a Jewish champion studying to be a rabbi — and the concern that Cotto might no longer be the formidable fighting machine he once was.

Cotto is the betting favourite. He is much more experienced that Foreman and has fought at a much higher level. Foreman, though, has the speed and the style that could frustrate Cotto. After all, Freddie Roach was not interested in a match between Manny Pacquiao and Foreman. Roach didn’t like the fight for Pacquiao against such a tall, mobile, bigger opponent. If Roach saw Foreman as likely to be troublesome for his superstar fighter it says a lot, to me anyway.

Foreman, then, is a boxer who must be taken seriously. Yet for all his evasive skills, I have no doubt that Foreman is going to get hit in this fight, likely harder than he has ever been hit. If he can take Cotto’s punches without wilting and maintain his movement and jabbing, he has a tremendous opportunity to score a memorable victory.

Having Emanuel Steward as his trainer is a huge plus for Cotto, but, despite this, I am going with Foreman to spring the upset — I have the feeling that he has the size, the speed and the style that can carry him to victory.
